Summer Bonnets - Check

Here are two new bonnets I've made for Scarlett that will do us for the upcoming summer weather.   I chose to do two versions:  the pink al-rounder because every little girl looks good in pink;

And the lilac/coral version to go with the purples and corals in the wardrobe.  I could be convinced to do a third version in blues/yellows from my huge stash of Picnics & Fairgrounds... we'll see about that later as there are lots of other things to get through, like my Xmas sewing!

Don't forget you can get your own bonnet or PDF pattern at Little Betty.

This is my first WIP Wednesday post.  After about six months I finally feel like I have something to contribute (also I think putting your WIPs down on a list helps to focus on what needs to be done).

A Baby Boy Bonnet

A good friend had her second little boy on the weekend so after contemplating what gift I could make with supplies on hand it was obvious that a little bonnet would be perfect for the upcoming summer.

After auditioning a number of fabrics from my boy stash I originally chose the "Beep Bots" fabric paired with a green and blue dot instead of the denim, but I only had a fat quarter and it's supposed to be for Lewis' superhero doll on my to do list.  Since I have a fair bit of denim and beep bots and they were a great match I thought it was great to be able to reduce my stash a bit.  Luckily I also had the ribbon, and the matching threads (blue on one side & green on the other)!

The pattern is available here but if you don't sew you can also buy a boy (or girls) bonnet here.

Girls Winter Bonnet - Version 2

I decided that Scarlett needed a second bonnet to co-ordinate with all her pink clothes.  The other bonnet goes well with purples and corals but not the pinks.  I do love pink in every shade but I do try to dress Scarlett in other colours too.  We actually do a lot of plum/purplish shades & dusty pinks and mauves which really suit her fair/reddish complexion.

Twinkle Twinkle
This bonnet is made from a deep ruby-pink pinwale cord and a floral Tana Lawn I found at Spotlight of all places!  Spottie actually had quite a good selection of the Tana Lawn (made in Japan too), I'm assuming it's a Liberty rip-off?  Anyway, as much as I would love to be loyal to Liberty my bank balance isn't and I do like being able to select things by hand instead of online.  They also had a range of vintage reproduction prints which were too cute but I had to restrain myself as I do not have a need for any new fabric.

I had a hard time getting good photos of her modeling the bonnet, and I did take a heap.  I don't think our point and shoot camera is very good either, the colours are not quite right (except for the one below).  Lewis wanted in on the action too.

The pattern is available from Little Betty for only six bucks (less in A$)!!

Winter Bonnet

Scarlett had her first birthday a week ago.  I had trouble working out what presents to get her since we have a house full of toys already.  I thought that I would have to give her a couple of Mummy-made presents along with a small assortment of new toys/books (and send some old toys to be recycled to new family members).  The first thing I made was this winter Little Betty bonnet.  Remember this old post showing off Scarlett's summer bonnet which she adored and wore everywhere?

Little Betty recently released the pattern so I thought I would have a go at making a winter one.  The pattern is very well written and the bonnet was whipped together in a day (even with lots of interruptions by the small people!!).

The interior is some Robert Kaufman flannel I had left over from the infinity scarves I made earlier this year (blogged here & here).  It is the softest flannel I have come across.  The exterior is a fine pin wale cord from Spotlight.

As soon as Scarlett saw this bonnet she wanted to wear it, which is great since I struggled to get her to wear a beanie this winter.  You can get the pattern here.

PS:  Did you spot the second handmade present?  I'll blog about that later.

Little Bonnets by Little Betty

Here's Miss Scarlett modelling her new Little Betty bonnet.  These super awesome bonnets are handmade by Little Betty and let me tell you, the quality control is pretty.... um, strict (the word I would rather use starts with an "a")!!  After playing around with a few prototypes, Little Betty came up with a pattern that sits really nicely, provides lots of shade from the sun and is completely reversible (so you get two bonnets in one).  The pattern is so good in fact, that a bonnet that is too big still sits really well!  Let's face it, you want your little ones to get good wear out of things before they outgrow them.  Miss Scarlett is a bit on the petite side so at 6mths old she is wearing the 6-12mth bonnet which has loads of room but still looks good now and will probably do her for two summers.  Little Betty bonnets are available online or for those that like to see things in the flesh, they are selling out fast at My Messy Room in Sydney.

One of my favourite time-wasters is fabric window-(online)-shopping.  I think Little Betty is doing a great job already but I couldn't resist putting together some fabric combinations I think would make great bonnets (the design possibilities are endless, I only had time to look at a few collections and some of the below combos are interchangeable with each other).  The first one and the last two are my favourites.  I also think Little Betty should consider making these bonnets for little girls not just babies/toddlers.
